‘FLOATING’

FLOATING is a purveyance of feelings that lift beyond the cares of the material world that hems in and crowds out calm. It is partly inspired by a book I wrote called ‘WHISPERS OF BETTER THINGS’ derived from a quote by Octavia Hill (co-founder of the National Trust who also suffered a complete mental breakdown in her lifetime). Octavia wrote “We all need space; unless we have it we cannot reach that sense of quiet in which whispers of better things come to us gently”. I have adored this poetic understanding for many years and it informed this small sculpture. The work is a hybrid of naturally sculpted heavy ironstone and unnatural repurposed insulin vials from my T1 diabetes and found wood from a beach In Yorkshire.
