Black Box - A Mixed Media Piece

BLACK BOX ACRYLIC, OIL PASTEL & CHARCOAL ON RECYCLED CARDBOARD, 2024 I created this piece in response to the profound lack of awareness and attention directed toward women’s healthcare today. With its cavernous space front and centre, this old box was the perfect canvas to depict the hidden ‘Black Box’ within. Living with chronic pelvic pain, women often find themselves engulfed in a relentless struggle with healthcare professionals who are unable or unwilling to grasp their suffering or offer effective solutions. Black-tipped fingerprints surround the box to this end; as though something is trying to claw its way out but cannot. Our pain often remains shrouded in silence, dismissed as part and parcel of being a woman. ‘Black Box’ underscores these profound disparities in awareness and empathy, urging us to confront the hidden agony endured by countless women and prompting a crucial dialogue about the imperative need for better understanding and support in women’s healthcare.
